When I first picked this book up, I was unsure exactly what to expect. The cover art is gruesome and fun, but covered in blurbs and propaganda. Sure, it does have a quick snapshot of what the book is, but the rest is praise and “What will you do!?!?!” The last choose your own adventure style book I read was probably when I was thirteen, and they were never very plot heavy, but they were always good for a laugh and to pick through more then once.
Starting up, I was genuinely curious as to what would await me between this intentionally distressed looking cover. I picked through it the first time and found gore, action, vulgarity. It was imaginative and painted the scene. “I am here, I am doing this… I am feeling this!” The characters were original and spunky, though the main character was your “everyman”, someone the reader could relate with and feel.
It is set in New York City, which is fantastic because different paths take you to unique and fun locations. (Statue of liberty, Madison square garden, Yankee Stadium)
So of course after getting to my first ending, I had to try again and see what outcome awaited me. I read through it again, and again, and again. Cuddled up on my chair I can’t actually figure out how many different conclusions I came to while reading. The back cover says there are fifty different endings, I certainly didn’t make it that far yet.
I found this book meaty and maniacal. Brallier has taken something lots of us adored in childhood and turned it into something we can enjoy in adulthood. It was a very satisfying trip, and I was surprised at how entertaining and plot driven it was.
